WORLD BOOK DAY THURSDAY 5TH MARCH11 February 2026 (by Jade Taylor (JadeT)) |
We are inviting all our children to dress up as a book character on World Book Day, Thursday 5th March. Dressing-up can be a fun way to get children talking about books, sharing recommendations, and celebrating what they enjoy reading.
Easy costume tips
When helping your child choose what to wear, start with the book.
- Pick a book your child is happy to talk about
- Use items you already own, such as tracksuits, T-shirts or pyjamas
- Add one simple detail to show the character, setting or idea from the book
- Focus on comfort so your child feels confident on the day
A small prop or label can say just as much as a full costume.
If dressing up feels hard
Not every child enjoys dressing-up, and that is okay. There are plenty of ways to take part.
- No book to share? Try a T-shirt or badge that invites recommendations
- Not keen on costumes? Use everyday clothes with one prop or label
- Prefer non-fiction? Celebrate facts, subjects or dress as an author
- Not crafty? Use hats, ears, stickers or a sign pinned to clothing
The book choice matters more than how the costume looks.
Here are some easy ideas:
Easy & No-Sew Costume Ideas
- Gangsta Granny (David Walliams): A black skirt, twinset, glasses, white wig, and a sack of "stolen" goods.
- Where’s Wally/Wenda: Red and white striped top, beanie hat, jeans, and round glasses.
- Matilda: A blue dress with a red ribbon in the hair and a pile of books.
- Burglar Bill: Dark blue/black striped top, mask, and a pillowcase for a swag bag.
- The Tiger Who Came to Tea: An orange outfit (or t-shirt) with stripes drawn on and some ears.
- Wimpy Kid: White t-shirt, black shorts, and a backpack.
- Paddington Bear: A blue duffle coat, red hat, and a luggage tag.
Pyjama/Comfort-Based Ideas
- Sophie (The BFG): A pink nightie with a jar labeled "dreams".
- The Midnight Gang (David Walliams): Pyjamas, dressing gown, and a bandage/sling.
- Tom's Midnight Garden: Blue and white striped PJs.
Last-Minute & Low-Cost Tips
- Repurpose Costumes: Witches, wizards, and skeletons (from Halloween) work for many fantasy books.
- Use Props: A wand and cloak (Harry Potter), a simple cardboard crown (royalty), or a witch's hat.
- Focus on Accessories: Hats, masks, and badges can turn normal clothes into a costume instantly.
- Face Paint: Use face paint for animal characters like the Tiger, or to add whiskers to a Peter Rabbit.
