Free School Meals (FSM) – Important Changes from September 20264 June 2026 (by Jade Taylor (JadeT)) |
The Department for Education has announced some changes to Free School Meals (FSM) that will come into effect from September 2026.
What is changing?
Expanded eligibility
From September 2026, all children from households receiving Universal Credit will be entitled to Free School Meals.
Changes to transitional protection
Currently, some pupils continue to receive Free School Meals under transitional protection arrangements, even if their family circumstances have changed. These protections will remain in place until the end of the 2025/26 academic year.
From September 2026, transitional protection will end. Eligibility for Free School Meals will then be based on a family's current circumstances at the time of assessment.
This means that some pupils who are currently receiving Free School Meals through transitional protection may no longer be eligible unless they meet the new eligibility criteria when their entitlement is reviewed.
If you think your child may be eligible for Free School Meals, please complete the BMBC Free School Meals application form at www.barnsley.gov.uk/free-school-meals-form.
If you require any further information or support, please contact the school office.
